The medical science that studies and treats is called Psychiatry. The term was first introduced by Johann Christian Reil in 1808. Psychiatrists can treat a great many mental illnesses. Psychiatrists work around the globe. They help patients to deal with depression, treat sleeplessness etc. There are a lot of mental illnesses and phobias that require specialist medical aid. Sleeplessness, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, abnormally high pressure moods, various personality disorders etc are some of the commonest mental disorders. ANOREXIA is a common mental disorder, particularly in young females. It starts when a person, commonly a young girl starves intentionally or eats less to lose weight. However, starving causes a compete loss of appetite and serious health problems, for example infertility in females. Schizophrenia is another serious mental disorder. It has been studied by psychiatrists for years. It is an abnormal perception of reality adversely impacting on all five senses. Bizarre delusions, abnormality in speech, disorganized thinking pattern, paranoia are common behavioral patterns in schizophrenic patients. Schizophrenic people commonly suffer from severe depressions and anxiety disorders. Schizophrenics have a much shorter lifespan than mentally healthy people. One of the reasons is a high rate of suicides among people suffering from the mental disorder. Though it is not hereditary, Schizophrenia is recorded to affect family members. Alcohol addiction remains a common problem to be treated by specialists. Social problems, for example unemployment, poor living conditions and homelessness, are common as well. Psychiatry handles mental illnesses resulted from chemical imbalances in the brain. The way people think, their beliefs, their culture and experience, life situations and many other things shape up their psyche which may be severely challenged because of circumstances. A psychiatrist through a psychiatric aid and medications try to renew the balance in the brain. This process is time-consuming and requires a lot of effort.
